May 5th is Cinco de Mayo Day!

Sunday May 5th is typically Cinco de Mayo day where people eat Mexican food (and maybe enjoy some margaritas). But did you know that this is not the date of Mexican independence? That is actually September 16th. Cinco de Mayo which literally means the fifth of May is a minor holiday in Mexico that celebrates the date of the Mexican army’s 1862 victory over France at the Battle of Pueble during the Franco-Mexican War. In the United States, Cinco de Mayo has evolved into so much more – it is now a celebration of the Mexican culture and heritage.

Part of the Mexican culture is their mariachi music. So this weekend, enjoy learning about the Mexican culture as you make your own maracas and have a little parade of your own.

Here’s what you need:
Clean, dry smoothie containers (2 per set)
Noise making items (fillings) such as beans, rice, dry pasta, or beads
Tape
Paint and paintbrushes or other decorative items
Fill your smoothie containers with different amounts of the filling materials, this will help to make different sounds. Tape the top closed, and decorate the exterior using your paint or other materials.
